Simple steps keep the med center safe

With security and safety on campus being a priority every day, the UNMC Department of Public Safety is reminding UNMC faculty, staff and students of simple actions they can take to make a difference.

  • Wear ID badge visibly
A campus ID badge is more than just a form of identification — it’s a key part of the med center’s security system. It’s important to always wear it in a visible location while on campus or Nebraska Medicine grounds. This helps everyone quickly recognize who is permitted in med center spaces. When faculty, staff and students are reminded to wear their ID badge, they’re encouraged to be courteous and comply.
  • Prevent tailgating
Card access doors are there for a reason. If someone tries to follow through a secured door without swiping their badge, it’s okay to politely stop and ask if they have access. If anyone is uncomfortable doing so, call campus security at 402-559-5111. It’s not unfriendly — it’s about being vigilant.

Steve Williamson, director of public safety support services for UNMC, said everyone at the med center plays a role in keeping it safe and secure.

Williamson advises: Be courteous and helpful — but also be alert. Know who’s around you. If something doesn’t seem right, say something. Your awareness and action can make a real difference, he said.

Call public safety at 402-559-5555 for emergencies and 402-559-5111 for non-emergencies. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to add these numbers to their cell phone contacts.
