Several UNMC faculty and trainees have been recognized with awards from the Nebraska Chapter of the American College of Physicians. The awards will be presented at the chapter’s annual scientific meeting on Nov. 6.
UNMC awardees include:
- Debra Romberger, MD, former chair, department of internal medicine: Lifetime Achievement Award (posthumous). The Lifetime Achievement Award honors the exceptional accomplishments of an ACP member, fellow or MACP who has devoted their life to the practice of medicine, education, and community service.
- Gale Etherton, MD, associate professor of general internal medicine: Chapter Laureate Award. This award honors fellows or masters of ACP who have demonstrated by their example and conduct an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education or research, and in service to their community, their chapter and the American College of Physicians.
- Carrie Hoarty, MD, assistant professor of general internal medicine: Women Physician of the Year Award. This award recognizes and honors an ACP member as an outstanding woman physician with a distinguished career in areas of exceptional patient care, medical education and/or research.
- Christopher Smith, MD, associate professor of hospital medicine: LeeRoy Meyer Dedicated Teaching Award. This award honors a physician that exemplifies the talent, enthusiasm and professionalism demonstrated in medical education by Dr. Meyer.
- Chydubem Nwaiwu, MD, internal medicine resident: Chapter Advocacy Award. This award is given to a physician in appreciation for their service in health care and public policy and in working in the political arena at the local, state and national level.
- Landon Withrow, MD, internal medicine chief resident: Resident Leadership Award. This award recognizes a resident with qualities that exemplify the ACP’s mission to “enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine” and who has made exemplary contributions to ACP on a local level.
- Kathryn Kim, MD and Olivia Makos, DO, residents: Resident of the Year Award. This award is given to a resident/fellow member who demonstrates professionalism and leadership in his/her residency program, the medical profession and the community. The recipient is identified as going above and beyond what is required of a resident.
- Sophia Cima: Medical Student of the Year Award. This award is given to a medical student member who has demonstrated excellence in scholarship, interest in internal medicine, community service and outreach, and who has participated in chapter and other internal medicine-related activities.
The ACP is a national organization comprised of internal medicine physicians. The Nebraska chapter includes approximately 1,000 members. The ACP is the largest medical specialty society in the world.
