Angela Felton-Coleman’s work in community healthcare has earned her a designation shared by Omaha’s past and current leaders.
Felton-Coleman, a PhD student at the UNMC College of Nursing, received an African American Leadership Award as a healthcare leader from the Urban League of Nebraska at its 35th annual African American Leadership Awards ceremony in August.
The event honors individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions in a variety of avenues, including education, business, advocacy, public service, and beyond. Past winners include newly elected Omaha mayor John Ewing and former Omaha Chief of Police Thomas Warren.
Felton-Coleman has a hard time putting into words what joining that company means to her.
“I am completely flabbergasted,” she said. “I haven’t quite wrapped my mind around.”
As part of the honor, she will have a plaque with her likeness displayed at the Urban League of Nebraska – another thought that’s difficult to comprehend.
“Generations to come will see this plaque on the wall,” she said, adding with a laugh, “I still can’t believe that.”
Felton-Coleman’s dedication to public service includes 20 years as a nurse, volunteering at various health fairs and clinics throughout the Omaha community and participating in her church’s nurses’ ministry. She also speaks at community events and provides information to organizations concerning healthcare needs in the community.
Felton-Coleman’s involvement in her community is not something she does for to be recognized, but knows the plaque will be a permanent, physical reminder that she has made a difference. “
“Just knowing that my community sees me and what I’m doing is making an impact is the best part,” she said.
