The UNMC College of Medicine is accepting applications for both the Joseph P. and Harriet K. Gilmore Distinguished New Investigator Award and the Physician Scientist Award.

Both awards are open only to faculty from the college. The deadline for nominations/applications for both awards is 5 p.m. Dec. 5.

The Gilmore Award recognizes the research accomplishments of a faculty member who is emerging as an outstanding independent investigator. The recipient(s) will receive a monetary award and be recognized at a symposium and reception sponsored by UNMC College of Medicine Dean Bradley Britigan, MD.

Candidates must hold the rank of assistant professor and have demonstrated excellence and productivity in research while at UNMC.

The award recognizes the accomplishments of faculty doing biomedical research, and both non-clinician (basic) scientists and clinical scientists can be nominated.

Nominations should come from a supervisory position, such as department chair or division chief. Nominating letters and a current CV of the nominees should be emailed to Mary Anne Phillippi in the college’s office of research and development. Contact Howard Fox, MD, PhD, at (402) 559-4821 or Phillipi at (402) 639-3531 with questions.

The Physician-Scientist Training Program Award provides research-oriented residents, fellows and junior faculty the opportunity to further develop careers in biomedical research. The award totals $200,000, which is comprised of a two-year salary plus benefits award of $75,000 per year, plus $25,000 per year for supplies/operating expenses.

The program is targeted to individuals either with less than three years as faculty or as part of a recruitment package activated when they begin their appointment.

Interested candidates can nominate themselves and should include in the application their CV and a document of up to four pages with a brief description of their previous research, a statement of their current research goals and their plan to achieve independent funding.

In addition to the application materials, the applicant’s department chair and/or division chief should provide a letter of nomination that discusses the protected time they will provide to accommodate for the applicant’s research.

Applications will be scored on the applicant’s previous research experience and productivity, the likelihood that the proposed research project will lead to a competitive, external funding application and the potential of the applicant to continue as a successful and productive physician scientist at UNMC.

Email Dr. Fox with application or eligibility questions. Submissions should be sent to Phillippi by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5.
