Be a lifesaver in the Big Ten blood drive challenge

Nebraska Medicine is proud to join the We Give Blood campaign, a Big Ten-wide effort sponsored by Abbott to increase blood donations and save lives in the community.

Each year, universities across the Big Ten Conference compete to see which institution can log the most blood donations. The University of Nebraska is the 2024 inaugural winner and reigning champion. The winning university receives $1 million to support student health initiatives.

This year, Nebraska is running close with Wisconsin – and with the help of donors, the team can close that gap and again win the top spot before the competition ends.

Through the competition’s close on Dec. 5, donations made during blood drives at Nebraska Medicine can count toward the University of Nebraska’s total in this year’s competition. Last year, NU topped the Big Ten with more than 4,500 donations. Let’s help them win again.

Here’s how donors can help:

  1. Donate at one of the upcoming blood drives at Nebraska Medicine or UNMC.
    • Nov. 18, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.: Bellevue Medical Center, 2500 Bellevue Medical Center Drive. Sign up here.
    • Nov. 20, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.: Nebraska Medical Center, lower Storz Pavilion, 4350 Dewey Ave., sponsored by Clarkson College. Sign up here.
    • Nov. 25, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.: Lied Transplant Center, 4350 Emile St. Sign up here.
  2. Log the donation to count toward NU’s total:
Donors can log at the We Give Blood campaign website or by texting DONATE to 222688 (ABBOTT).

This is more than a competition – it’s an opportunity to make a life-saving difference and showcase Nebraska Medicine’s leadership in health and service. Every pint donated saves up to three lives.

With this partnership, the drive can make a measurable difference for patients and families across Nebraska – and show the rest of the Big Ten the strength of Nebraska’s spirit.
