Isaiah Jones, a 21-year-old participant in the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s Trailblazer Program, is the artist whose drawing was selected to be used in this year’s MMI holiday card.
The Trailblazer Program provides focused academic, vocational and social learning, as well as other experiences, to young adults.
Jones, who said he has been drawing at least since his years at King Science & Technology Middle School, hopes the program can help him turn his love of art into a job and career. He is in the program through its partnership with Omaha Public Schools Transition Program.
Many members of his family have a flair for art, Jones said. His uncle encouraged him to draw, and his older sisters are also artists — Asha draws, and Tatiana paints. Tati was the person who taught him shading techniques, Jones said.
“I’m always drawing,” he said, adding that he likes to listen to music when he draws.
He also enjoys working out and dancing, he said.
He said he was excited his art had been chosen for the card. The drawing features a snowman in a snow shower, with detailed snowflakes.
MMI has been choosing its holiday cards from among the work of its clients for a number of years, said Jackie Hankins of MMI’s community engagement team. The art usually is chosen from among the work of the Trailblazer’s participants.
“I’d love to teach kids art and drawing,” Jones said. He’d also like to become a professional artist and comic book designer.
Hankins said MMI was excited that so many Trailblazer participants submit art to be considered for the card, which will be shared with stakeholders and supporters of MMI.
“Isaiah did a great job,” she said.
