Message from the Interim Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine

Mark Rupp, MD

As 2025 draws to a close, I offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to members of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine for a job well-done!  A year of delivering compassionate care, excellent training and teaching, and answers to scientific questions.

Throughout the year, the department demonstrated resilience and dedication.  We suffered the loss of our beloved leader Dr. Debra Romberger, who dedicated her career to making UNMC internal medicine better, and we honored her legacy by keeping the department moving forward. We successively found our next permanent chair, Dr. Hemant Roy, who will start in the spring of 2026, and I am confident he will be an excellent leader.

The department is skillfully navigating great challenges – budget cuts, government shutdowns, and an assault on science, higher education and public health.  We are remaining true to our ideals of equality, inclusion and justice.  Each and every day, we continue to serve our patients, students, colleagues and community to the best of our ability.

Over the year-end holidays, I hope all members of the department are able to spend quality time with family and friends.  I wish everyone a joyous holiday season and hope that 2026 brings us good health and prosperity.
