UNMC students bring blood-pressure screenings to North Omaha

UNMC students stepped into the community in early January to provide blood-pressure screenings and health education at neighborhood barbershops across North Omaha — serving about 40 community members in a day.

The initiative was organized through the Bridge to Care student organization, a UNMC Office of Community Engagement Legacy Group, in partnership with the Student National Medical Association. The effort reflects UNMC’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and improving access to preventive care in trusted community spaces.

This student-led event was featured by two local television stations. Watch the coverage here:

Participating barbershops included Keelan’s Barber and Beauty, Heavi Hitters on Maple Street and Red Hot Barber Shop on Ames Avenue.

The UNMC Office of Community Engagement and Bridge to Care will continue similar efforts this year, expanding opportunities for students to engage directly with community partners and make a meaningful impact.

UNMC students who would like to join initiatives like this can contact the UNMC Office of Community Engagement’s program coordinator, Andrea Subitoni Antonio, by email.
