UNMC once again will welcome participants from Step-Up Omaha, and departments across the UNMC campus are invited to host student interns for the upcoming summer session.

Step-Up Omaha is a collaborative partnership involving the City of Omaha, the Empowerment Network and numerous community donors and organizations. More than 100 businesses and organizations participate each year to provide career exploration and paid internship opportunities for students across the community.

The 2026 summer program runs from June 2-12. After completing two weeks of training, interns will be available for on-the-job work experiences from June 16-July 31.

UNMC exposes interns to transformative career opportunities and valuable soft skills development. Interns participated in HBDI assessments, social, wellness and physical activity events, along with campus tours.

UNMC worksite partners have included human resources, the chancellor’s office, academic affairs, the vice chancellor for research office, the Munroe-Meyer Institute, the office of campus engagement, the Global Center for Health Security, and facilities management and planning.

Evelyn Grixby, UNMC’s program coordinator, said she is excited to work with UNMC colleagues interested in hosting, mentoring and connecting students ages 16 to 21 with meaningful career opportunities.

Grixby said, “Success is accomplished when the intern who chooses UNMC and completes their summer work experience leaves empowered and more confident in the leadership, time management, communication and teamwork skills they have developed.”

Linda Cunningham, assistant vice chancellor and executive director of UNMC Human Resources, said, “We’re proud to partner with Step-Up Omaha to offer students meaningful, hands-on experiences that build confidence and expose them to career opportunities. Their contributions make a real difference across our teams, and we’re pleased to participate in a program that helps prepare the next generation of professionals.”

For more information on hosting an intern and joining the effort to connect the youth in the community to career exploration and job internship opportunities, email Grixby to discuss the program and request a job request form. Job request forms must be received no later than March 10.
