‘Gut Check’ gastroenterology seminar set for April 28

The UNMC Center for Continuing Education is sponsoring the upcoming seminar “Gut Check 2026: Practical Gastroenterology Updates for Frontline Clinicians.”

The continuing education event will update on screening, diagnosis and management of common gastrointestinal conditions encountered in primary care. It highlights red flag symptoms requiring urgent referral and reviews current guidelines for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, hepatitis and colorectal cancer screening.

The seminar will be Tuesday, April 28, from 7:30 a.m. to noon at the Truhlsen Campus Events Center.

The seminar’s directors are Ishfaq Bhat, MD, associate professor in the UNMC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Sarah Malik, MD, assistant professor in the UNMC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Scheduled discussions include:

  • “Everyday GI in the Clinic: Updates on GERD, Barrett’s esophagus, colorectal cancer screening and IBS.”
  • “GI Emergencies & Red Flags: Guidance on upper/lower GI bleeding, acute jaundice and abdominal pain evaluation.”
  • “Liver & Nutrition Advances: Insights into NAFLD/MASLD, alcohol-associated liver disease and simplified Hepatitis B & C screening and treatment.”
  • “IBD & Endoscopy 2026: New therapies, GLP-1 effects on the GI tract and the latest endoscopic tools that impact referrals.”
  • An interactive Q&A to discuss complex cases.

In support of improving patient care, University of Nebraska Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
