Nebraska Native Youth Gathering: Fostering cancer-related learning

The annual Nebraska Native Youth Gathering, held in West Point, Nebraska, brings together Native youth from across the state for a meaningful experience rooted in culture, connection and personal growth. Designed to foster peer relationships, the Gathering provides youth with opportunities to connect with fellow students, gain traditional Native knowledge and skills, and explore future career and college pathways.

The Gathering centers on honoring the Sacred Hoop—body, spirit, heart and mind. Sessions are intentionally designed to address each of these elements, with hands-on activities and workshops highlighting the importance of balance and well-being while empowering participants to envision strong futures for themselves and their communities.

This year’s event on April 15, 2026, welcomed 300 total attendees representing Omaha Public Schools, Lincoln Public Schools, Bancroft-Rosalie, Omaha Nation, West Side, Valentine, South Sioux City, Winnebago, and Walthill.

The Gathering included a Career & Vendor Fair, where youth explored resources and educational opportunities, including information from the UNMC’s Youth Enjoy Science Program (YES).  The YES Program is a national research education initiative funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI); its purpose is to encourage students to explore education and careers in science, health and research, with a strong emphasis in cancer-related fields.

Together, these youth shared a powerful experience of cultural pride and connection, and of learning what the NCI-designated Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and YES Program offers for them and their communities.

The Gathering featured breakout sessions, including Igniting Interest in Research Careers: Pathways in the Youth Enjoy Science Program by Dr. Aislinn Rookwood, assistant professor in the UNMC College of Public Health, and Native American Populations and Cancer Care presented by Rachel Hack, M.Ed., from Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (FPBCC) Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination Office.

Kali Ratigan (Program Coordinator) also attended on behalf of the YES Program, and Lauren Garcia (Community Outreach and Engagement Specialist) met with attendees at the event as the representative of the FPBCC’s Community Outreach and Engagement team. A total of 70 students, 6 teachers, and chaperones attended the YES and FPBCC presentations.
