UNeMed creating ‘Startup Wall’ to celebrate NU innovations

Michael Dixon, PhD, UNeMed president and CEO

UNeMed will unveil a new feature celebrating University of Nebraska startup companies with an open party on July 22, and the UNMC community and public are invited.

The event celebrating the Startup Wall will be held on Wednesday, July 22, from 5-7 p.m. in the passageway of the Catalyst building in the EDGE District.

The Startup Wall will be a prominent and permanent fixture at UNeMed’s office, located within the heart of Catalyst. Another feature at UNeMed’s office is a wall of shelves displaying successful products invented at UNMC.

“We wanted to find a way to celebrate the innovation and the courage it takes to start a new company,” UNeMed President and CEO Michael Dixon, PhD, said. “The university startups that merit inclusion on our wall represent more than $200 million in investments, hundreds of jobs and real solutions to serious problems. We wanted to show exactly how the University of Nebraska improves lives and why it’s worth investing in the people that create innovations that make these companies possible.”

The Startup Wall will feature 23 startup companies that have met UNeMed’s selection criteria. Future events will be held as new companies achieve these standards.

The product wall of shelves highlights and displays several university inventions that have helped improve lives as products used in clinical applications or as products for public sale. Some of the products on display include the tumor-ablating LeVeen Electrode Needle, an anti-malarial compound called Synriam and a nasal sample collection device called MicroWash.

The Startup Wall party will provide complementary food and drink, and the chance to network with the region’s entrepreneurial community including founders, inventors and investors, as well as university, city and state leaders. Free burgers, brats and refreshments will be available, and guests are asked to RSVP at this link by Friday, July 10.
