Dr. Hepburn honored by National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences
Kirsten Hepburn, PhD, a postdoctoral research associate in the UNMC College of Nursing, received two awards from the 2026 National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences at their annual AIM AHEAD Health Data Science Training Program Meeting in July.
Dr. Hepburn received the individual Health Data Science Interprofessional Communication Award, recognizing her ability to communicate rigorous health data science research across disciplines. She also designed her team’s research poster for which they received the Top Poster Presentation Team Award, which recognized the team’s collaboration, scientific rigor and presentation of its research project.
Dr. Hepburn is a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Michele Balas, PhD, in the UNMC College of Nursing. Her interdisciplinary mentoring team also includes Julie Petersen, PhD, and Jesse Bell, PhD, of the UNMC College of Public Health. The NIH-supported, competitive entry AIM-AHEAD training program prepares emerging researchers to use health data science to address complex health challenges.
Dr. Hepburn earned both her Bachelor’s of Science in nursing and PhD at UNMC.

UNMC faculty to co-direct ACP’s 2027 Midwest Point of Care Ultrasound Conference
UNMC’s Chris Smith, MD, and Rachel Johnson, MD, assistant professors in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, have been named the co-directors for the 2027 Midwest Point of Care Ultrasound Conference.
The event, sponsored by the Nebraska and Missouri chapters of the American College of Physicians, will be held at UNMC’s Davis Global Center on May 13-14, 2027.
