The UNMC College of Medicine recently received grants and awards representing more than $11 million in new funding. The following individuals received awards:
- Kate Hyde, PhD, biochemistry and molecular biology, received a grant of $559,996 from U.S. Army/USAMRAA/CDMRP for “A Novel Role for the Splicing Factor PTBP1 in Familial Plate Disorder with Associated Myeloid Malignancies.”
- Yatin Vyas, MBBS, MD, pediatrics-hematology/oncology, received a grant of $477,012 from DHHS/NIH/NAIAID for the study “Defining WASp-dependent pathways in replication stress.”
- Sandipan Brahma, PhD, genetics, cell biology and anatomy, received a grant of $422,125 from the DHHS/NIH/NIGMS for the study “Chromatin Remodeling Mechanisms Across Scales.”
- Joshua Santarpia, PhD, pathology, microbiology and immunology, received a grant of $357,693 from the National Strategic Research Institute for “Blueprint FILTR.”
- Andrew Dudley, PhD, genetics, cell biology and anatomy, received a grant of $318,439 from the DHHS/NIH/NIGMS for the Developing Experts in Computation, ‘Omics and Data Exploration (DECODE) training program.
- John Davis, PhD, obstetrics and gynecology, received a grant of $305,023 from Wichita State University for “Understanding the Role of FSHR Oligomerization and Trafficking in Transducing Age-dependent Changes in FSH Glycoforms.”
- Paul Fey, PhD, pathology, microbiology and immunology, received a grant of $230,250 from the University of Colorado-Anschutz Medical Campus for a study of staphylococcus aureus metabolic requirements during skin colonization.
- James Murphy, MD, internal medicine-pulmonary, received a grant of $189,625 from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for the CFF Center Adult Program.
- Moataz Ellithi, MBChB, internal medicine-oncology/hematology, received a grant of $165,092 from the National Marrow Donor Program for a platform protocol to investigate post-transplant cyclophosphamide-based graft-vs-host disease prophylaxis in patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing mismatched unrelated donor peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.
- Austin Wheeler, MD, internal medicine-rheumatology, received a grant of $100,000 from the Rheumatology Research Foundation for development of a comprehensive risk score for rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease and progression.
- Ashley Ravnholdt, PhD, emergency medicine, received a grant of $83,622 from the National Strategic Research Institute for the study “Disinfection Efficacy of Glycol Vapors in Controlled Multi-Chamber Aerosol Flow-Through System.”
- Hannah Harris, PhD, genetics, cell biology and anatomy, received a grant of $76,300 from the DHHS/NIH/NIGMS to study the relationship between 3D exon-exon DNA folding and RNA splicing.
- Afshin Salehi, MD, neurosurgery, received a grant of $65,000 from the Nebraska DHHS – LB506 to study peptide-targeted gold nanorods to enhance laser interstitial thermal therapy for glioma.
- Ted Mikuls, MD, internal medicine-rheumatology, received grants of $62,357 and $23,801 from the V.A. Medical Center for “Harlan Sayles IPA – PharmUP – 2025-2029” and “Hunter IPA Mikuls Merit YR1 2024-2025.”
- Bryant England, MD, PhD, internal medicine-rheumatology, received a grant of $13,318 from the V.A. Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System for “Carlos Hunter PA -Dr Bryant England VA Merit-2025-2029.”
- Roslyn Mannon, MD, internal medicine-nephrology, received a grant of $5,416 from the V.A. Medical Center-Omaha for “IPA for Harlan Sayles.”

The following industry-sponsored grants and contracts were received.
- Kathleen Moore, MD, obstetrics/gynecology, received funding for a study evaluating safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of ABBV-901 as a monotherapy and in combination with Bevacizumab in adult subjects with ovarian cancer. Dr. Moore also received funding for a study of MUC16-directed antibody drug conjugate HWK-016 in participants with advanced solid tumors.
- Snegha Ananth, MBBS, internal medicine-oncology/hematology, received funding for a study of Sonrotoclax plus anti-CD20 antibody therapies vs. Venetoclax plus Rituximab in patients with relapsed/refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma.
- Tammy Wichmann, MD, internal medicine-pulmonary, received funding for a study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of once-daily Treprostinil Palmitil inhalation powder in participants with pulmonary arterial hypertension.
- Eric Langewisch, MD, internal medicine-nephrology, received funding for a study for participants from the 299AR301 Felzartamab study.
- Ronald Zolty, MD, PhD, internal medicine-cardiovascular, received funding for a study for oral Levosimendan.
- Lindsay McAlarnen, MD, obstetrics/gynecology, received funding for a study of Raludotatug Deruxtecan (R-DXd), a CDH6-directed antibody-drug conjugate, in subjects with platinum-resistant, high-grade ovarian, primary peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancer.
- Scott Westphal, MD, internal medicine-nephrology, received funding for a study to evaluate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and preliminary efficacy of VEL-101 in kidney transplant recipients.
- Julie Vose, MD, internal medicine-hematology/oncology, received funding for a study of Sonrotoclax (BGB-11417) plus Zanubrutinib (BGB-3111) compared with Venetoclax plus Acalabrutinib in patients with previously untreated chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
