Better Process Initiative building a culture of improvement

Matthew Singh, director of Lean and Process Improvement

UNMC’s Better Process Initiative continues to expand opportunities for faculty and staff to develop practical process improvement skills that can be applied directly within their departments and teams.

During 2026, more than 100 faculty and staff members have completed Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training, equipping participants with structured problem-solving methods, data-driven decision-making tools, and improvement methodologies that help address complex operational challenges.

“The fact that more than 100 faculty and staff members have completed green belt training this year demonstrates the growing interest in continuous improvement across UNMC,” said Matthew Singh, director of Lean and Process Improvement. “The introduction of yellow belt training creates an accessible entry point for individuals who want to learn practical tools they can immediately apply to improve processes within their own areas.

“This strong participation reflects a growing commitment across UNMC to continuous improvement and operational excellence,” he said.

One final green belt cohort will be offered Oct. 19-20, providing interested faculty and staff with an opportunity to participate before the end of the year.

In addition, UNMC is launching a new Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt training program. This three-hour, in-person course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of process improvement and continuous improvement principles. Participants will learn practical tools that can be immediately applied in their work areas, including root cause analysis techniques and visual management methods that help teams identify opportunities, solve problems, and drive local improvements.

Yellow belt training sessions are currently scheduled for:

  • Nov. 5
  • Nov. 10
  • Dec. 3
  • Dec. 8

Whether employees are interested in leading larger improvement projects through green belt certification or learning foundational improvement tools through yellow belt training, these programs provide practical skills to improve processes, enhance efficiency, and better serve our students, patients, faculty and staff.

Registration is now available for both green belt and yellow belt training through the Better Process Initiative website.
