Byers Shaw, M.D.

Van Vahle, M.D.
Byers Shaw Jr., M.D., Musselman Centennial Professor in the UNMC Department of Surgery and medical director for the Advanced Clinical Applications Program, has won a $5,000 prize from “Creative Nonfiction” and The Salt Institute for his essay titled, “My Night With Ellen Hutchinson.” In the essay, Dr. Shaw recounts a sleepless night he spent as a member of the University of Pittsburgh transplant team.

Van Vahle, M.D., a family medicine physician in Seward, received the Marion D. and Theodore H. Koefoot Jr., M.D., Outstanding Preceptor Award in Rural Family Medicine from UNMC. The Koefoot Award was created in 2005 in memory of Dr. Theodore Koefoot and is granted to a rural Nebraska family physician who provides outstanding teaching and mentoring of medical students during their family medicine rural preceptorship and serves as an outstanding community physician.

Craig Piquette, M.D., received the Dr. LeeRoy Meyer 2011 Teaching Award from the Nebraska Chapter of the American College of Physicians.

Peter Murphy, M.D., and the cystic fibrosis team at UNMC, received a Quality Improvement Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at its national meeting.
