Bert Van Oeveren will retire Wednesday after 35 years at UNMC, and his colleagues are hosting a retirement tea for him from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday in University Tower’s Private Dining Room A.

Van Oeveren started working in the furniture stores department at UNMC in 1981. Four years later, he became the building maintenance expert in the rental property department, a position he would hold for the rest of his career.

During his tenure, Van Oeveren has helped thousands of UNMC students living in on-campus housing with their maintenance needs.

“When tenants graduate from UNMC and move out, they often wonder what they will do when they can’t call Bert every time something breaks,” said Esther Collins, Van Oeveren’s supervisor. “‘Go-to repair man,’ ‘maintenance expert,’ ‘Jack of all trades’ — all of these titles describe Bert to a T. Bert has always taken ownership of the apartments and houses, treating them as if they were his own property, making repairs and improvements wherever he could. He treated them as if it were housing for his own family.

“Bert knows all the rental properties like the back of his hand. There have been many, many changes in the buildings over the years but Bert knows all the ins and outs and the maintenance quirks that come with every building, old and new.”

Van Oeveren has been honored during his career with the Silver U Award as well as several Outstanding Performance Awards.

The campus is invited to come to the retirement tea and wish him well.
