Resident program director of the month

Name: Matt DeVries, M.D.

Medical school attended: UNMC

Attended UNMC for medical school, did radiology residency at UNMC.  I did a body imaging fellowship at UNMC and then did cardiothoracic training at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

Location of your residency/fellowship training:

I did a radiology residency at UNMC. I did a body imaging fellowship at UNMC, and then did cardiothoracic training at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

What residency/fellowship program at UNMC are you serving as program director for:

 Diagnostic radiology residency

Number of trainees:

We have 24 residents total.

How long have you been the program director:

I’ve been the program director for the diagnostic radiology residency for about eight years.

What made you chose to become the program director:

I decided to become program director because I felt that I had a passion for helping to help shape and structure a training program that would help educate and train the next generation of radiologists. Residents have a great energy and excitement about medicine and, in a selfish way, it’s great to feed off that energy. If nothing else, they’ve helped keep me young at heart.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future:

I foresee one of the biggest challenges to graduate medical education will be funding sources.

More and more medical students are graduating, but residency spots are only getting harder to come by.

What are the strengths of your training program:

As clichéd as it sounds, I really think one of the biggest strengths of our program is the people that make it up. We’ve been fortunate to attract great residents that want to contribute as well as very engaged faculty that overall have an incredible passion for educating. That coupled with our relatively small program and department size makes for a very familiar/personal feel to our program.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

Probably the accomplishment I’ve been the most proud of is the network and community we’ve created throughout the region with our graduates. At a more tangible level, I also was proud that one of our resident quality projects created a relatively streamlined way for outside imaging studies to get formally over-read, and that we were able to publish that experience and success.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

1.      I was on a rowing team throughout undergrad.

2.      I worked in private practice before coming back to UNMC.

3.      In my life, I’ve spent more time on bicycles than in vehicles.
