UNMC to host cricket tournament in March

UNMC will host the Omaha Cricket Association’s (OCA) Spring 2020 Omaha Indoor Cricket Cup from March 20-22 at the UNMC Center for Healthy Living.

Registration is $250 per team and is now open for the event. Contact the OCA to register.

“This event will warm the hearts of cricket lovers in Omaha and surrounding states especially after these gruesome winter months,” said Vinod Yarroju, a member of the OCA.

Cricket is a bat and ball sport that originated in Great Britain, belonging to the same family as baseball and considered by many as the grandfather of Baseball by many. The OCA event will feature approximately 16 10-person teams.

The OCA was unofficially formed as a cricket club in 1991 in Omaha, holding matches in open spaces and school playgrounds, such as Norris Middle School. With the help of Mayor Hal daub, a cricket field was secured at NP Dodge Park.

Following the 2019 flooding, which left the NP Dodge field unusable, the OCA, a nonprofit organization, is raising funds to find a new home field. Funds from the UNMC event will go to support the club in this mission.

The UNMC community is invited to participate or come watch the event. Volunteers will be ready with the drawing boards to explain the game of cricket in detail.

I have loved watching teams play cricket in Elmwood Park over the last several years. The sportsmanship is truly refreshing and the action engaging.
