Valda Boyd Ford is wrapping up an eight-week, volunteer experience at the 140-acre Buduburam Refugee Camp, the largest camp in Ghana with roughly 42,000 people. Ford, director of UNMC’s Community and Multicultural Affairs, has been working with Unite for Sight, an organization dedicated to health promotion and disease prevention. Today, she outlines a “typical” day at the Buduburam Refugee Camp.

Perception and reality – a look at cultural compentecy

When I travel, I (like many people) engage in small talk with fellow travelers. The usual question is asked: “Where are you from?” When I answer “Nebraska,” I get a number of responses: blank stare, surprised expression or the most frequent response, “How do you like it out there by yourself?” Many people are unaware of the actual diversity of our state and even more are surprised about the diversity of the metropolitan area.
