Summer funds available for Scholars
The University of Nebraska Rural Initiative intends to support a Community of Scholars drawn from various campuses and disciplines in order to build new relationships between NU faculty, Nebraska communities, institutions and regions and others beyond Nebraska’s borders interested in similar work. Proposals must be submitted no later than May 15.

Dr. Black receives 2005 Alvin Earle Award
Students say Joyce Black, Ph.D., is an outstanding nurse with a gift for public speaking. They also say the she has a knack for teaching. As a result, UNMC students honored Dr. Black last week with the 2005 Alvin M. Earle Outstanding Health Sciences Educator Award.

Faculty recognized for years of service
The campus is invited to celebrate the accomplishments of its faculty members at today’s Annual Faculty Meeting, which begins at 4 p.m. in the Durham Research Center auditorium. In addition to exceptional teaching, mentoring and community service awards, faculty members who have worked at UNMC for 30, 20 and 10 years will be recognized.

Dr. Marky earns Outstanding Mentor of Graduate Faculty Award
For Luis Marky, Ph.D., being a mentor is a lot like being a parent: You need to know when to push them to do better work, and you need to know when to have a little fun. Dr. Marky’s firm-yet-caring approach to teaching his students has earned him a reputation as one of the best faculty mentors on campus. He will be recognized Tuesday at the Annual Faculty Meeting, which will begin at 4 p.m. in the Durham Research Center auditorium.

Regents approve construction of second research tower
UNMC likely will break ground late this summer or early this fall on a second 10-level research tower. On Friday, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents unanimously approved construction of the facility, which is presently being called the Research Center of Excellence II.

Dr. LaFramboise among 2006 outstanding teachers
In her clinical teaching, Louise LaFramboise, Ph.D., always emphasizes the person in the bed. Calm in critical care situations, she helps students develop their critical reasoning and interpersonal skills with patients who are critically ill. This is the third in a series of profiles on this year’s outstanding teachers. The awardees will be recognized April 25 at 4 p.m. during the Annual Faculty Meeting in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.
