Dramatic play explores questions of slavery — part 1 of 4
Americans of all races are asking two key questions: What did slavery really do to black people, women and society as a whole; and can America truly evolve into a multicultural society, with respect and opportunity for all, without a full accounting of the legacy of black slavery? For answers, see Friday’s dramatic production of “Let My People Go: The Trials of Bondage in Words of Master and Slave.” The campus presentation is free.

Two honored at cardiovascular research symposium
UNMC’s seventh annual Cardiovascular Research Symposium ended Feb. 7 with a traditional selection of top poster for basic research and for clinical science. Mark Niebauer, M.D., Ph.D., UNMC associate professor in the department of cardiology, won the clinical science poster award. Wanfen Xiong, M.D., Ph.D., UNMC instructor in the department of surgery research, won the basic science poster award.

Chinese New Year’s Party draws crowd
For the second straight year, the NHS/UNMC campus was the host site for the 2003 Chinese New Year’s Party. On Feb. 6, up to 321 guests enjoyed continuous live entertainment from Chinese musicians and singers in the NHS Storz Pavilion, while feasting on eight different entrees.

NHS/UNMC host city-wide Chinese New Year’s Celebration Feb. 8
The 2003 Chinese New Year’s celebration – Year of the Goat – will be Saturday, Feb. 8, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., at the Lower Storz Pavilion of NHS Clarkson Hospital. Advanced tickets are $6 adult, $4 student, $2 for children under 12. Tickets purchased at the door will be $1 more. See story for details.

UNMC students to observe African American HIV/AIDS
The Omaha/Lincoln area will hold its second annual observance of African American HIV/AIDS Awareness and Information Day Thursday, Feb. 6. Members of the UNMC Student National Medical Association (SNMA), including Oluyemisis Smith, a second-year medical student and UNMC’s SNMA president, will assist in AIDS education presentations in North Omaha.
