Student-patients study at NHS 2 Cool Hospital School

Anyone who thinks that a hospitalized student might be happy about missing school couldn’t be more wrong. NHS has a department that responds to the educational needs of hospitalized children — Educational Support Services (ESS). But through the patient wards of the Lied Transplant Center, NHS Clarkson and University Hospitals and Ronald McDonald House, ESS is better known as the 2 Cool Hospital School. Statewide poll shows support for fetal cell research

Findings of a statewide poll released today shows more than two-thirds (70 percent) of Nebraska registered voters support fetal cell research at UNMC. Nearly three-quarters of the registered voters contacted also indicated support for embryonic stem cell research should it be conducted in the future at the University of Nebraska. The poll was commissioned by Nebraskans for Research (NFR).

CNND celebrates fifth anniversary with symposium, dinner

UNMC’s Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Disorders (CNND) will celebrate its fifth anniversary, on July 18-19, with a symposium, a critical review of its research and a dinner.

The symposium and review will feature a blue ribbon panel of external advisors and National Institutes of Health officials who will share research perspectives and judge the progress of the center. CNND investigators will follow the panelists with reviews of their own laboratories’ research and development over the past five years.

Minority summer research interns include Dillard students

The historic affiliation agreement between UNMC and Dillard University, a historically black college in New Orleans, bore its first fruit three weeks ago when five Dillard students arrived for 10 weeks of research and mentoring with top UNMC professors.

In addition to the Dillard five, there are three more African-Americans — one each from Xavier University, Grambling University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. There also is a Native American student from UNL and two Hispanic students from the College of St. Mary in San Antonio, Texas.
