College of Medicine Student of the Month – Jenn Harney, third-year student
Editor’s Note: Each month, InterCOM will highlight a “Student of the Month” from the College of Medicine. Students will be featured for their participation in activities outside of medical school and for making a difference in the community. The goal is to recognize students for what they are doing and to encourage other students to get involved in the community. After all, medical school should be much more than studying.

UNMC, Omaha VA researchers to study if vitamin D prevents diabetes
The Department of Veterans Affairs Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System and UNMC are taking part in the first definitive, large-scale clinical trial to investigate if a vitamin D supplement helps prevent or delay type 2 diabetes in adults who have prediabetes and at high risk of developing diabetes.

UNMC study seeks to improve outcomes for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma
UNMC researchers have discovered that patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma don’t respond well to the standard drug therapy used to treat this type of cancer if they have high levels of a gene called STAT3.
The findings are published in the November issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the medical journal of the American Society for Clinical Oncology.
