Neurological sciences chairman helps lead study comparing stenting vs. surgery
UNMC’s Pierre Fayad, M.D., was one of six researchers on the executive committee for a major national study — reported in the April 10 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine — that compared stenting and surgery in high-risk patients with significant narrowing of the carotid artery and found that there is no significant difference in the long-term outcomes of these patients three years after either one of the procedures was performed to open up the artery.

Seminar to focus on research integrity and publication guidelines
Research integrity guidelines from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) should be familiar to all active researchers at UNMC. In addition, the new requirements for submission of NIH-supported publications to PubMed Central for public access and databases — with other forms of information technology that track scientific publications — allow increased access to, and analysis of, the vast amount of information produced by today’s researchers. Philanthropic giant, Charles Durham, transformed UNMC
Charles “Chuck” Durham wanted his legacy to be biomedical research, but the impact and contributions of this hands-on civic leader who transformed UNMC, goes far beyond that wish.
On Monday, the UNMC community remembered Durham, who died Saturday at age 90, for his visionary leadership, philanthropic spirit and the indelible impact, he and his late wife, Margre, had on UNMC, where their names are synonymous with research excellence.
