Flexible Work Schedule

During the CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) response timeframe, it may work best for your department to consider a flexible work schedule to respond to school/daycare closures and other rapidly changing staffing needs specific to CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19). This guide is specific to the CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) response and recommendations may include information that differs from the UNMC Human Resources Work Schedule Procedures.

Departments may institute a schedule of flexible working hours for employees, provided it does not increase staffing costs or decrease departmental efficiency. Flextime allows employees to maintain a work schedule other than normal UNMC hours. Regardless of flextime scheduling, all offices should be sufficiently staffed to maintain regular operations during normal UNMC hours.

Flexible scheduling for non-exempt (hourly) employees can incorporate varying times for arriving at and leaving work and/or for lunch breaks. When exempt (monthly) employees are expected to work more than 40 hours in a workweek, departments are encouraged to offer them flexibility in arranging work schedules.

When it is possible to do so without decreasing work efficiency, departments are encouraged to consider employee requests for flexible scheduling, for example, four 10-hour days.
