John Latenser, M.D., clinical assistant professor in the department of surgery, is a general surgeon and volunteer faculty member for more than 50 years. A well-known lecturer on skin cancer and wound healing,
Dr. Latenser is the founder of the Omaha Inventors Club and the Omaha Wound Care Club for nurses. He also is a founding member of the American College of Chemosurgery and a charter member of the American Society of Parenteral Enteral Nutrition.

Dr. Latenser developed a surgical technique for coverage of large exposed areas of bone and cartilage. In addition, he holds patents for a device for relief of low back pain and a device for prevention and healing of pressure sores on feet and lower legs.

His current projects include:

  • Eradicating bedsores in Omaha hospitals and nursing homes. Bedsores are devastating to patients and cause enormous financial waste throughout the entire health care system, nationally.
  • Raising money to teach early reading by way of phonics instruction in kindergarten, first and second grades in both Omaha public and parochial school systems, with special emphasis on Title I schools.

With a life filled with numerous honors, Dr. Latenser looks forward to yet another one coming up in the fall. He will be inducted into the Omaha Central High School Hall of Fame.
