UNMC students will hold a community health fair on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Campfire USA headquarters, 2566 St. Mary’s Ave. in Omaha.
The health fair will focus on nutrition and fitness, with individual consultations on healthy eating and exercise. There will be demonstrations of creative and easy fitness exercises and healthy snacks. The fair is interdisciplinary, with students from dietitian and physical therapy programs, as well as a personal trainer.
“We are very excited about the event, as it combines the typical screening of health fairs with one-on-one counseling with medical students regarding nutrition, exercise, blood pressure control and smoking cessation,” said Kristi Derrick, a UNMC medical student.
The health fair is through UNMC’s medical students’ section of the American Medical Association. It will feature a Kids’ Corner with health education activities and entertainment. Approximately 60 UNMC students will participate and there will be Spanish translators available.
“This year we are providing a limited number of free influenza vaccinations to the first 60 people who need them,” Derrick said.
Financial donations can be made by making checks payable to UNMC NMA-MSC and sending them to Ben Nelson, Sorrell Education Building Mailbox 218, 998215 Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE 68198-5525.
