Magda Peck, Sc.D., who was instrumental in building UNMC’s public health infrastructure, was honored for her contributions to public health in Nebraska in a legislative resolution by state Sen. Tanya Cook of Omaha.

“Dr. Peck’s leadership in the areas of public health and social justice are unmatched,” Cook said of the public health leader who will leave UNMC to become the founding dean of the Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “The State of Nebraska and the entire Great Plains region have benefited greatly from her work. Her presence in and service to our community will be greatly missed.”

A farewell tea for Dr. Peck will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. in the third floor commons area of the Maurer Center for Public Health.

Jagar Jasem, M.D., student of epidemiology in the College of Public Health, published an epidemiological analysis of measles in the December issue of the International Journal of Infectious Diseases. In the study, Dr. Jasem, a Fulbright scholar from Duhok, Kurdistan region, Iraq, revealed that measles rates were significantly higher in the central and southern parts of Iraq compared to the more secure and politically stable northern (Kurdish) part.
