Among the highlights at the third annual Skate-a-thon for Parkinson’s this weekend will be tricycle races on ice.

At noon on Saturday, four fully-grown adults will hop on tricycles and race around the rink at the Scott Student Plaza.

Ahead of Saturday’s race, the racers will spend the week in search of funds. The top earners will get inside lanes for the races.

To help your favorite racer get the inside lane, pledge to donate to the UNMC Skate-a-thon for Parkinson’s fund in his or her name. Simply contact your racer (email addresses are linked below), let him or her know how much you plan to pledge, then donate online or bring your donation to the Skate-a-thon.

So without further delay, let’s meet our racers!

Howard “The Racin’ Researcher” Gendelman, M.D.

Off the ice, Dr. Gendelman speeds toward a vaccine to knock out Parkinson’s disease. On the ice, he’s headed for the finish line. (Email Dr. Gendelman)

“Flying” Fran Higgins

Many afternoons, Higgins circles the ice on skates. Let’s see how smooth she makes the trip on three rubber tires. (Email Fran)

Bob “The Hammer” Binhammer, Ph.D.

A fan of opera, rollerblades and torturing first-year medical students, the Hammer will look to roll to an easy victory on Saturday. (Email Dr. Binhammer)

The UNMC Today editor has coaxed other employees into various acts of ridiculousness — such as human ice bowling and badminton matches against world-class competitors. On Saturday, he gets a taste of his own medicine. (Email Chuck)
