Karin Carlson

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee. This week, we learn more about:

  • Name: Karin Carlson
  • Hometown: This is a hard one, I’ve moved around most of my life. I would say my home is where I currently reside, Papillion.
  • No. of years at UNMC: 11 years.

Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.

I design and maintain the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s website, develop and maintain the intranet for MMI on Blackboard, serve as liaison between MMI, UNMC Public Relations, and UNMC IT Video, coordinate all telehealth and webinar activities at MMI as well as technical support, provide photography and graphic design support, and maintain the media archives.

“Working together” is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us about how you have seen teamwork prove important to success in your work at UNMC.

I see teamwork every day at MMI. The amazing faculty, staff and students work tirelessly to help individuals with developmental disabilities. I see success in our patients’ smiles and hear their squeals of joy echoing down the hallways. MMI is a collaboration of exceptional professionals who are passionate about what they do and who they help. I couldn’t have asked for a better job or place to work.

What is your favorite fall activity?

Riding my bike along the limitless bike trails in and around Omaha with my husband and taking pictures of the fall foliage.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I graduated from high school at the base of the pyramids in Cairo, Egypt. The commencement speaker was Mrs. Jehan al-Sadat, the wife of the Egyptian president at that time, and I received a high school diploma printed on papyrus paper with my name in hieroglyphics.
  • I am attempting to write a book about my mother’s escape from the Russian invasion of Estonia during World War II when she was a child.
  • I am an avid fan of The Walking Dead.
