Series will discuss religion and patient care

On Jan. 21, UNMC will host a course, “Caring for Patients With Soul – Islam,” which will review cultural considerations which may impact health care for Muslim patients.

The event will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Eppley Science Hall, Room 3010.

This is the first session in a three-session series. Future sessions will deal with Jewish and Christian groups.

Following the course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the potential importance of religion in the life meaning and healing process.
  • Develop an awareness of basic Muslim traditions.
  • Develop an awareness of how some Muslim immigrant’s access health care.
  • Raise awareness of Nebraska Medicine’s cooperation with Muslim patients from other countries who come to Nebraska Medicine for treatment.
  • Reflect upon Muslim beliefs which might impact health care decisions.

The panel of speakers will include:

  • Rev. Joyce Miller, staff chaplain at Nebraska Medicine
  • Mohammed Al Kadhim, International Healthcare Services, Nebraska Medicine
  • Maisha Godare, community leader
  • Jamil Neme, M.D., family medicine resident house officer, UNMC
  • Lacey Studnicka, program development officer, Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska

Nebraska Medicine is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Midwest Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation, and 1.8 contact hours will be awarded for this presentation. You must be able to attend the entire presentation to receive contact hours. No partial credit will be awarded.
