On May 30, the Nebraska Institutional Development Award Program (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program welcomed 26 undergraduate students from across Nebraska as they embark on their summer research experience at Creighton University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Below Daniel Gutzmann, talks about his INBRE experience.

What should we know about you?
I am a student of biology at Wayne State College. I love the outdoors and making a positive difference in the lives of others. I am always seeking to improve myself and be engaged.

Has science always been a part of your life?

Yes, science has always been a part of my life. From a young age I grew up asking questions about the world around me. Growing up on a farm I was constantly surrounded by animals and loved it. I became fascinated with science in high school and my background in scouting allowed me to further explore subjects I am interested in. College has been an immense opportunity to take those interests and make it into a viable career path.

How is it important to you?
Science is important to me because it provides so many opportunities for new discoveries that can have profound effects on the world around us.

Why did you choose to participate in the INBRE program?
I chose to participate in the program to further engage myself in science, and there’s no better way to do so than in a research lab. I have always had an interest in research, so when this opportunity became available I knew I had to be a part of it.

What do you hope to gain from the program?
I hope to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to be a researcher. As well, I hope to gain further knowledge of myself and find my potential in the scientific community and most importantly, to see if this is a career I can see myself pursuing in the future.
