University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds, Ph.D., has announced that university offices will be closed Wednesday (Dec. 5), in observance of a national day of mourning for former President George H.W. Bush. Wednesday will be considered a day of (paid) administrative leave for all leave-eligible employees.

  • All in-person classes are canceled on Wednesday, Dec. 5.
  • Synchronous online classes also are canceled.

On Monday, President Trump issued an executive order providing for the Dec. 5 closing of all executive departments and agencies of the federal government. Gov. Pete Ricketts followed suit, announcing that all state buildings will be closed that day and employees will be granted a day of leave.

The University of Nebraska Human Resources Handbook for Policies states that, “Regular employees may be granted administrative leave with pay in the event of non-scheduled ‘declared’ holidays authorized by the U.S. president, governor, or president of the university.”

Certain UNMC units may need to remain open and operational on Wednesday. Designated essential personnel should continue to report, and will be compensated as established by campus payroll policies and procedures. Contact your supervisor if you have any questions.

Nebraska Medicine will remain open and operational. Clinic and hospital functions also will continue as scheduled.

If you have a UNMC campus activity scheduled for Wednesday, please update its status in the campus calendar and also leave a comment below.
