UNMC’s Farmers Market debuts July 2

Looking for ideas for healthy and delicious meals this summer? UNMC’s Farmers Market starts July 2, continuing every Tuesday through Aug. 6. The market is open to the public and is sponsored by the UNMC College of Public Health Wellness Council.

UNMC bags in which to carry produce will be given to the first 100 people who show up at the market on opening day.

The market will be conveniently located on the UNMC ice rink between 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Aug. 6. In the event of rain, the weekly market will be cancelled.

Produce will be provided by Wenninghoff’s Farm, which has been operated by an Omaha family for more than 50 years. More than 40 varieties of vegetables are offered — by the piece or by the bushel.

Sodexo chefs, UNMC/Nebraska Medicine’s food service provider, will offer a meal preparation demonstration on July 2 and will distribute recipes using produce sold at the market. A registered dietitian will be on hand to answer questions on that day.

Each of the following weeks, Tamara Ragar, UNMC Department of Human Resources, will provide demonstrations and information on using fresh produce to create healthy dishes. Her demonstrations will be whole food plant-based with no oil, salt or refined sugars. Recipes for various vegetables also are available on the Wenninghoff Farm website.

Will Wenninghoff offer organic options? The website says that some of their products are free of pesticides, and that they use as little "as necessary". Will buyers know which, if any products are free of pesticides?

  2. Kay says:

THANK YOU for offering this!! I am so excited.

Is this THE Dr. Byers "Bud" Shaw, world renound liver transplant pioneer?! I received a liver transplant a year ago at UNMC, and thanks to your expertise and wisdom, I'm alive and able to attend this farmer's market! It's an honor to even communicate with you, and I will happily buy anything you need and even soak and scrub any vegetation to decontaminate from toxic pesticides! Thank you so much for your contribution to modern medicine!

Can any other produce vendors participate?

Hi Carol Ann. Wenninghoff Farms agreed to participate in this trial season. We look forward to evaluating the response to this Market and hope to expand in future years. Fingers crossed!

Hi Bud. Wenninghoff won’t be able to mark pesticide free produce with 100% certainty. They attempt to use as little pesticide as possible but they are not an organic farm. Make sure and wash your produce throughly before use.
