Dr. Ahmad named to study section for Center for Scientific Review

The Center for Scientific Review (CSR) through the National Institutes of Health has appointed a UNMC faculty member, Iqbal Ahmad, Ph.D., to serve a four-year term on the Diseases and Pathophysiology of the Visual System Study Section. The term begins July 1 and ends June 30, 2023.

Dr. Ahmad is professor, ophthalmology and visual sciences, and associate dean for postdoctoral affairs, Graduate Studies.

“We have been proud of Dr. Ahmad’s past research accomplishments, and this serves as a further, celebrated recognition of his competency in the field on a national level,” said Ronald Krueger, M.D., McGaw Professor and Chairman of the UNMC Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and director of the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute.

Study section members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors.

Study sections review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on these applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of science.

“I am thankful to CSR for considering my expertise worthy of a regular member of a study section,” Dr. Ahmad said, “and I greatly appreciate the opportunity to participate in the mission of NIH like my peers nationally or here at UNMC.

Dr. Ahmad joined UNMC in 1994 as assistant professor, cell biology and anatomy, and was elevated to associate professor, ophthalmology and visual sciences in 2000. In 2004, he was appointed professor, ophthalmology and visual sciences, as well as pharmacology experimental neuroscience. Since 2005, he has served as associate dean and director, postdoctoral education.

“These functions are of great value to medical and allied research in this country,” said Noni Byrnes, Ph.D., director of the Center for Scientific Review. “Membership on a study section represents a major commitment of professional time and energy as well as a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort.

“Service on a study section also requires mature judgment and objectivity as well as the ability to work effectively in a group, qualities we believe Dr. Ahmad will bring to this important task.”

Since 1946, the CSR has served as the gateway for NIH grant applications and their review for scientific merit. The CSR organizes peer review groups or study sections that evaluate the majority (75%) of the research grant applications sent to NIH as well as some other components of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
