UNMC students can intern in D.C. this summer

UNMC students can spend a summer in Washington, D.C., working and rubbing elbows with the nation’s policymakers through the University of Nebraska Professional Enrichment Academy.

Three UNMC students who spent last summer in this program will answer questions at an information session from noon to 1 p.m. on Dec. 2, in Sorrell Center, room 2018, said Brenda Nickol, director of career services, College of Public Health, and UNMC’s DC Enrichment Academy career coach. Lunch will be provided to the first 20 students. The session is sponsored by Student Delegates.

For the past two years, the program has brought together students from all four University of Nebraska campuses for a summer of academic, cultural and social enrichment in the nation’s capital. The program consists of a weekly seminar and various activities in June and July. Students build a network over the summer and share their experiences during the academy seminars to supplement the field-specific experiences interns receive.

Medical student Taylor Kratochvil, who interned with Sen. Maria Cantwell, (D-Washington), said the academy exceeded his wildest expectations and expanded his horizons. Working on Capitol Hill “opened my eyes to the number of opportunities I may have in my future. I hope to one day become involved in policy and/or advocacy.”

Ashton Wyrick, public health student, said she gained a valuable professional “real-world” working experience through her internship with the March of Dimes. “I was able to do substantive, meaningful work that has not only been a learning experience for me but was also valuable to the mission of the March of Dimes.”

Ryan Jespersen, medical student, interned with the American Society of Radiation Oncology and recommends this program to anyone even remotely interested in D.C. or any sector of government. “I gained a larger understanding of how the health care system truly works and made great connections with alumni who are willing to help me in the future.”

Application deadlines for the summer 2020 academy are: Feb. 1 for priority consideration, April 15 for the final deadline.
