Carol Angle, M.D., former chair of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics, received an Alumnae Achievement Award from the Wellesley College Alumnae Association on Oct. 17.

In 1948, Dr. Angle received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Wellesley, a private, nonprofit liberal arts college for women located in Wellesley, Mass., about 12 miles west of Boston. She earned her medical degree from Cornell Medical College (now called Weill Cornell Medicine) in 1951.

After doing her pediatric residency in Nebraska, Dr. Angle joined the UNMC faculty in 1954 as an instructor in pediatrics. She was elevated to assistant professor in 1957, to associate professor in 1968 and to professor in 1971.

From 1981 to 1985, she served as chair of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics, becoming one of the first women in the country to serve as chair of an academic department. From 1985 to 1998, she served as director of clinical toxicology. She was named professor emeritus in 1999, wrapping up a 45-year career on the UNMC faculty.

Dr. Angle was among the first to discover the devastating levels of environmental lead exposure in Omaha, after finding abnormally high lead levels in local children. She is credited as a major influence behind Nixon’s Clean Air Act and the following 1996 amendment that banned the sale of leaded gasoline, which reduced overall lead levels in children by more than 80 percent from 1977 to 1999.
