The NAS is a professional society dedicated to providing services to its members and to all
Nebraskans. In addition to an annual meeting, NAS provides its members opportunities to
publish, apply for student scholarships, and administers small grants to further public
environmental science education. The NAS is affiliated with the American Association for
the Advancement of Science and the National Association of Academies of Science. The
NAS was established in 1880 and uses a set of seven objectives to guide its activities.

These objectives include:

  • To further the work of scientists and to facilitate cooperation;
  • To improve the effectiveness of science in the promotion of human welfare and environmental quality;
  • To provide the opportunity for scientific research related to the problems of the ever-changing environment of the Great Plains;
  • To increase public understanding and appreciation of the importance and promise of science in human progress;
  • To stimulate science education, and to encourage young people to become involved in science;
  • To foster the interaction of business, industry, government, education, and the academic scientific community; and
  • To disseminate scientific knowledge, and to recognize high achievements in attaining the Academy’s objectives

The NAS is classified as a 501(c)(3) private foundation. Donations are tax deductible. The
NAS is not a state agency, and is not sponsored by a particular university, college, or other
