Dear All,

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is persevering through this challenging time. I hope you will enjoy reading about the amazing achievements of the faculty and department which have occurred over the last few months.

While we adjust to the new normal, this summer has been a busy time in the department. In June, we celebrated the graduation of our five chief residents. Thanks to technology, we were able to celebrate this milestone virtually and include the graduates’ families from their cities across the United States. For Friday morning's events, the graduating residents and a few faculty and staff members were able to socially distance in the Lauritzen Outpatient Center's auditorium. They were joined via Zoom by all department faculty, residents and several family members. This year's guest professor Michael Millis, MD joined us via Zoom from his home in Boston. Following his two presentations, several of our pediatric orthopaedic faculty presented cases via Zoom and had conversations about the cases with Dr. Millis, faculty and residents.

In July, we welcomed five new residents to our program. With the arrival of the class of 2025, the number of residents who have been a part of the department now exceeds 200. We are grateful to the faculty for their significant role in resident education, the residents for their great contributions to the department, and our engaged alumni for their continued support in educating the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.

This summer, we welcomed four new faculty members, bringing our faculty to a record number of 27. Beau Kildow, MD, has completed a fellowship at OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee Center and will be a valuable addition to our adult reconstruction team. Ryan Koehler, MD, and Nickolas Nahm, MD, will both join the department as assistant professors specializing in pediatric orthopaedic surgery and will practice at Children’s Hospital. David Nordin, MD will join the department as an instructor on the adult reconstruction team. These four surgeons bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and enthusiasm. Additionally, three new advanced practice providers have joined the department this summer to support our growing number of surgeons.

You will notice that department news is coming in a different format this summer. While we will continue communicating through our print version of Breaking News, we also plan to begin sharing department news through an electronic version of the newsletter. I hope you enjoy this format.

Thank you for your continued support of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation.

Sincerely,
Kevin Garvin, MD
