A decade in review

The department has seen many significant changes over the past decade. From our location on the UNMC campus, to a significant growth in faculty members, to the number of residents who come through our program, the past 10 years have brought many developments and accomplishments. Here’s a look back at some of the events and milestones of the past decade.

  • Over the past decade, the number of faculty in the department has increased  from 15 to 27. Our faculty have expertise in nine orthopaedic subspecialties.

  • In 2015, the department was approved for a fifth orthopaedic resident each year, bringing our total complement to 25.

  • The department moved to the newly completed Lauritzen Outpatient Center in 2016, bringing all facets of the department under one roof.

  • Located on the Lauritzen Outpatient Center’s fourth floor, the 4,100-square-foot Orthopaedics Biomechanics and Advanced Surgical Technologies Laboratory provides a state-of-the-art space for one of the country’s largest implant-testing facilities.

  • Hani Haider, PhD, and other faculty members hosted ten implant reviewer experts from the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) in 2017.  The reviewers visited the department to study the orthopaedic implant testing techniques and innovative developments at the lab.
  • As The Hip Society’s 48th president, Kevin Garvin, MD, hosted more than 100 members to Omaha for the 50th Summer Meeting of The Hip Society in 2017.

  • The department marked the 50th anniversary of its residency program with a celebration in 2019. Alumni, faculty and their families gathered for educational sessions and social events.

  • As the department continues to grow, faculty are expanding services to reach more of the community, including an increase in orthopaedic care at Bellevue Medical Center.
