Cindy Norton is honored with Gold U Award

As the administrator for the UNMC Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology, Cindy Norton knows how important it is to have discipline.

Without fail Norton begins her day at 5 a.m. with an exercise routine.

“This is my time to relax and destress, and by 8 a.m. I am ready to tackle the day,” she said.

Norton applies the same discipline, combined with creativity and enthusiasm, to her job.

For her commitment and outstanding service to the UNMC Norton will receive the February 2021 Gold U.

Norton joined UNMC in 1980 as a department secretary and today, she manages the overall financial, operational, human resources and administrative functions for her entire department.

She also handles all of the department’s grant submissions.

It’s something that she does so well, one nominator said, that the folks with UNMC Sponsored Programs tell other department administrators to look to Norton as a positive example of how to do things.

Norton also is described as having a calming influence and someone who brings novel ideas to improve processes and procedures within the growing department.

“I am excited to be working with extraordinarily talented investigators and such a hard-working administrative team, who in addition to the research mission, work just as hard to provide a meaningful educational experience to our research trainees,” Norton said.

“Being involved in the development of the Center for Heart and Vascular Research, which is a unique collaboration between Cellular and Integrative Physiology and the medical center, as well as providing support to trainees and meeting our educational mission, is an honor and a privilege,” she said.

Knowing Cindy for 40+ years I can attest to the fact that she is a consummate professional. Her expertise is the engine that runs the department. She is the "go to" person for all things administrative. We are all lucky to have her as our admin. If there was a platinum award, Cindy would be front and center.
