Nebraska State Sen. Megan Hunt, whose district includes the UNMC Omaha campus, toured the med center last week.

Hunt met with UNMC and Nebraska Medicine leaders, including UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, and toured the Davis Global Center, Wigton Heritage Center and McGoogan Library of Health Sciences.

She said it was a privilege to have UNMC in her district.

"The university has done a great job leading in Nebraska on COVID mitigation, masking, distancing. I’m glad that university employees will be vaccinated and masked — it’s important leadership for the rest of the state," Hunt said.

She also was excited to see the new Wigton Heritage Center and library.

"It looks better than I imagined, and it was so great to meet the people behind it," Hunt said. "I was impressed by the effort of the university to showcase the different types of people who have a connection to the university and a connection to medical history in Nebraska, because these are some of the stories that you don’t historically hear, that have historically been excluded from the mainstream education. So that’s really important."

Hunt encouraged the health care community to consider her a resource.

"Please let me know if there is anything you are curious about or anything I can do to make your life easier," she said.

The Library is a transformative place and it is important that this kind of contact with UNMC (understanding the full value of the library) and how the region can be impacted by the resource.

The Library has something for everyone on campus. Many people don't even know it exists or have never visited. I encourage everyone to go there, see the displays, use a study room, visit Dunkin for a coffee, or find a quiet place to contemplate. They have a 3D printing lab, anatomical models, meeting rooms, places to unwind, resources to help with difficult situations, and many other treasures. Explore.
