UNMC faculty, students honor Walter Scott Jr.

UNMC’s faculty and student senates each drafted a resolution honoring the vision and generosity of late UNMC supporter Walter Scott Jr., who died Sept. 25.

Students and faculty wanted to note the impact of Scott, who changed the landscape at UNMC — both figuratively and literally. The Suzanne & Walter Scott Cancer Research Tower, a 10-story, 98-laboratory section of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, is the most visible reminder of Scott’s support.

The resolutions noted that Scott was a visionary leader, who brought others aboard. For example, he was the first private donor to publicly commit to the medical center’s Project NExT, the proposed multibillion dollar federal disaster response center and state-of-the-art medical research and training facility, which will serve as an economic driver for the city and state.

Scott, through his support of UNMC and other Nebraska institutions, will continue to change the world, the resolutions said. The medical center, as the faculty resolution noted, will "carry on his vision of a better tomorrow in all the work that we do."
