Following a national search, Anne Barnes, senior associate dean for administration and finance at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, has been named the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s new vice chancellor for business, finance and business development.

Barnes will assume the role in early June, pending approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

"We are pleased to welcome Anne Barnes to UNMC," said UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD. "Ms. Barnes brings extensive knowledge of the interplay and interdependencies of academic health centers, physician practices, university systems and health system organizations, which will be a tremendous asset as we work alongside our health care partners and strategically plan for the future.

"I also want to thank our search committee, chaired by Dr. (Dele) Davies and special thanks to Susan Kraft Mann for serving as our interim leader these past several months. Susan is an invaluable member of our business and finance team and we are grateful for her continued service as assistant vice chancellor and director of budget and fiscal analysis."

Over the past 25 years, Barnes has served as the principal business officer for the OU College of Medicine and more recently also served as the chief administrative officer for OU Physicians, the physician faculty practice plan. In her roles at OU, Barnes negotiated a significant increase in OU Physicians’ largest commercial managed care contract and laid the groundwork to synchronize the provider and hospital contract terms.

"I want to thank the search committee and Chancellor Gold for selecting me for this incredibly important role at UNMC," Barnes said. "I am honored to become part of the leadership team of such a prestigious, dynamic and innovative academic medical center."

Barnes established her career at the OU College of Medicine, joining in 1996 as an assistant dean for finance before advancing to associate dean positions and, by 2012, into her current role as senior associate director for administration and finance.

Barnes earned a bachelor of business administration at Oklahoma Baptist University and a master in business administration (high honors) at Oklahoma City University. A certified public accountant, she serves on the planning committee for the Association of Academic Health Centers Senior Administrators/Fiscal Offices and is a past national chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Business Affairs.

The selection was made following recommendations by a 15-member search committee and campus interviews in March.
