Abraham Campos, MD

Abraham Campos, MD

Name: Abraham Campos, MD

Medical school attended: Loyola University Chicago – Stritch School of Medicine

Location of your residency/fellowship training:

  • Emergency medicine residency, UNMC
  • EMS fellowship, Regions Hospital, St Paul, Minnesota

What residency/fellowship program at UNMC are you serving as program director for?

Emergency Medical Services Fellowship

Number of trainees:

One house officer per year

How long have you been the program director?

Two years.

What made you choose to become the program director?

Medical education, especially in the prehospital setting, has been a passion of mine. Nebraska was in high need of physicians who are subspecialized in EMS, and I wanted the opportunity to help bring the practice to the region. The role of program director allows me the ability to help mold and develop a fellowship after my own residency/fellowship experiences and allows us to capitalize on the EMS opportunities that Omaha metro area has.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future?

Striking the right balance for in-person and virtual teaching for our current learners. The education environment continues to change over time, and the ready acceptance of online classrooms has led to an interesting effect on the return of in-person teaching and having to balance the pros and cons of each teaching format.

What are the strengths of your training program?

We have a variety of EMS agencies that our fellows will work with, such as urban, rural and specialized transport teams. The strong relationships with outside agencies and area hospitals affords the fellows many unique learning opportunities in mass casualty drills, mass gathering events, and other specialized EMS responses.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

  • Development and implementation of the EMS fellowship.
  • Graduating our first fellow this year.
  • My family.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • I have a strong interest in medical device innovation.
  • I am a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan.
  • I enjoy watching NASCAR racing.
