Remaining network share drives become read-only next month

Attention Nebraska Medicine and UNMC community: Anyone with files on a network share drive will have only a few weeks before their location becomes read-only.

On Dec. 12, most remaining share drives will transition to read-only status. This means users will be able to access these files in order to move them to a secure location on the cloud but no longer will be able to make changes to the content where it’s located.

All shares on the Nebraska Medicine Atlas Server are impacted and include:

  • NHSSecure
  • NHSRoot

Locations on the UNMC Consol servers are:

  • UNMCConsol5
  • UNMCConsol6
  • UNMCConsol7
  • UNMCConsol8
  • UNMCConsol9
  • UNMCConsol10

Data left on UNMC Consol shares will be moved to SharePoint sites and need to be claimed. Folder structures on SharePoint will mimic the existing share folders.

If users have information on a UNMCConsol server and wish to claim the new SharePoint site, they will need to submit a ServiceNow request here. Include the following information in your request:

  • Name of the user who will be the main point of contact for the SharePoint site (Super User)
  • Intended site owners (We recommend at least two owners for each site)
  • If you have any Access Databases on your share that you’ll need to continue to maintain

Progress continues moving all files to cloud-based locations

The final step will be to decommission these drives entirely, meaning access to the files will no longer be available. This is similar to the fate of the data stored on the former NHS shared drive, which was fully retired in July.

The file migration project is a joint effort between Nebraska Medicine and UNMC and has been under way for more than two years. During this time, digital files have been transferred to the cloud rather than relying upon premise locations for storage. Cloud-based solutions are more secure than shared drives.

Nebraska Medicine and UNMC use SharePoint and Teams, cloud-based storage solutions by Microsoft, that are ideal for storing shared files. Both options allow for collaboration and cross-team access. Files on SharePoint or Teams can be accessed from anywhere, anytime and do not require the user to be logged into the network through Global Protect.

The division I work in has an exiting SharePoint that we have not been utilizing. Can we start moving our shared drive files and content over to that one or do we need to claim what was newly created and submit a Service Now ticket?

Hi Travis! You can absolutely start moving files if you have an alternate location that is preferred.
