Options available to access new insurance ID card

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska, the university’s new health and dental insurance provider, is offering access for enrolled UNMC employees to get a digital copy of their new member ID card. Insurance cards also list the new EmpiRx Health prescription information.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska advises that member ID cards were mailed before Dec. 15, but some ID cards may not have arrived due to U.S. Postal Service delays. Those member ID cards still are expected to arrive in the mail.

Here are the options available to receive a digital member ID before then. Users are urged to use a desktop or laptop computer, instead of a mobile device:

Email Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska

If enrolled employees need a digital copy of their member ID card, they can email the account UniversityofNE@NebraskaBlue.com, also available at this link.

The ID cards are available online. But registration online requires a member ID number. The ID number also can be found on the Coordination of Benefits letter employees received in December. Employees who no longer have the letter can contact the UNMC Benefits Office to request their member ID number.

Once employees get their member number, they can register online at the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska website (www.nebraskablue.com) to get their digital ID card via these steps:

  • In the box that comes up, click on “Don’t have an account?”
  • A box comes up as “Step 1: Account Verification” with a prompt to “Enter Your Member ID*.” Enter the member ID in the box. Click “Next.”
  • The next box comes up as “Step 2: Member Verification.” Enter the information as needed. Click “Next.”
  • Then the next box is: “Step 3: Verify Email.” Enter your email address for verification. Click on “Send Verification Code.” It will specify that a verification code has been sent to your inbox. Copy the code into the input box in the prompt. Then click “Next.”
  • The final box is: “Step 4: Confirmation.” Create an account password as specified. Then click “Create.”
  • Afterward, members will need to sign in with the BlueCross BlueShield Nebraska account just created. After entering the new login information, click “Login.”
  • On the left of the webpage, one of the options is “View ID Card.” Click on that to show the member ID card, which is available to print or available for download (“Download ID Card Front” and “Download ID Card Back”).

The card is available to use or show where needed.

Secure message

Members soon will be receiving an email from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska offering access to a secure message to access their ID card. The email will have follow-up instructions to register an account and retrieve the secure document with the member ID card.

Question…how long are we to rely on digital insurance ID cards given that we are to receive a physical copy at our home/permanent addresses? The cards were allegedly mailed out on 12/15/23…what happens to our data/information/cards, if we DO NOT physically receive those ID cards at our addresses? The concern about confidential information being compromised is a concern. Thank you.

Hi, Stacey. Here’s an answer from the UNMC Benefits Office: Digital cards can be used even after physical copies are received, as they provide the same insurance information. If physical copies of cards are not received within the next couple of weeks, please contact the UNMC Benefits Office at benefits@unmc.edu. Our office will be keeping track of employees that report not receiving their physical cards to evaluate if further action is needed.
