During Black History Month, UNMC acknowledges the outstanding accomplishments of our Black faculty and staff members.

Today’s feature is Channing Bunch, director of Student Life Inclusion and Diversity Office (SLIDO). Bunch has been with UNMC for 10 years.

What are the most notable achievements in your professional journey?

  • Recruiting and coaching UNMC High School Alliance, Robert Woods Johnson Summer Health Professions, Summer Undergraduate Research, and other students to become health professionalss.
  • Coaching students interested in attending trade, college and/or professional school.
  • Creation of SLIDO during 2020.
  • Increasing the number of departments and undergraduate students’ slots for our Summer Undergraduate Research Program.
  • Being a great university partner.

What initiatives or projects have you been involved in to help promote diversity and equity?

In my early years as director of recruitment and student engagement, UNMC College of Allied Health Professions Dean Kyle Meyer, PhD, asked that I use my AAMC contacts to assist the college in developing a new recruitment and selection mechanism for their programs.

Other projects include:

  • Established the We Are UNMC BBQ.
  • Revamping our student organization platform.
  • Partnering with the University of Nebraska Foundation on UNMC Giving Day for our student organization.
  • ITEACH Student Awards Ceremony.
