Fedja Rochling, MD, has been named the chief of the UNMC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, effective Feb. 1, as Peter Mannon, MD, steps away from the chief’s role to focus on his role as director of the Frederick F. Paustian Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, his collaboration with Nebraska Food for Health and his research program.

Debra Romberger, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, announced Dr. Mannon’s decision last month. He remains a UNMC faculty member.

“Dr. Mannon has worked tirelessly as chief for the past four years to support the division and its missions,” Dr. Romberger said. “I have much gratitude for his commitment and accomplishments.”

Dr. Rochling completed medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland. He was a resident in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, completed his hepatology fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern and his GI fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He was faculty at the University of Arkansas before coming to UNMC as faculty in 2002. He now is a professor at UNMC and chief of gastroenterology at the Omaha VA. He was the interim chief of UNMC GI/hepatology division in 2019-2020.

“We are fortunate to have a gastroenterologist and hepatologist of Dr. Rochling’s caliber take on the role of continuing to grow the academic and clinical missions of the division,” Dr. Romberger said. “I look forward to what he will bring to the division and to the leadership team of the department.”

Dr. Mannon expressed gratitude for the dedication of the faculty and staff of the division.

“We implemented many changes and I appreciate the cooperation and hard work of those in my division,” he said. “I am grateful to have provided leadership for the division and I look forward to working together for a productive future.”
